 Help for Digital Photographers
Anyone with a digital camera knows that it doesn't take long to amass a mountain of image files. While you can just dump them all in one big folder on a hard drive, that's asking for heartache. Not only is it hard to lay your hands on specific photos, but unless you back up regularly, you could lose every one of those images if the drive fails.

And what about image editing and versioning? Color management? Assigning metadata? File formats? The deeper you get into working with digital imagery, the more workflow questions you have.

A new initiative, called "dpBestflow.org" (for "digital photography best practices workflow"), has answers. It's funded by the Library of Congress and promoted by the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP). The Web site's valuable advice, based on two years' worth of research, includes a quick reference guide and a thorough best practices section with lots of videos.Check it out!

Easy Fixes for Microsoft Word Formatting in InDesign
Anne-Marie "HerGeekness" Concepcion has found two free and easy-to-use scripts that convert Word's local formatting to InDesign's character styles. Two more retain InDesign formatting when you export text formatted with automatically applied character styles.

To test one of the scripts, HerGeekness started with a paragraph full of various text styles, all created with local (manual) formatting, and an empty Character Styles panel. She opened the InDesignScripts panel and double-clicked the PrepText.jsx script, which created and applied all the character styles you see below.

Scanning Around With Gene: The Miracle of Photochrom
Before the invention of color photography, there were several methods to add color to black and white photographs. None were more successful than the Swiss Photochrom process, and Gene Gable has compiled a stunning collection of examples.

TypeTalk: Distorting Type
Are you tempted to stretch or squeeze letters, perhaps to make a headline or subhead fit better? Ilene Strizver explains why that's not such a wise idea.
