Thanks to Jeff Squires for these images, which show the evolution of the Pepsi logo from 1898 to today.
The old logos (click to see a larger version):
The new logo and type:

Do you think the new design is better than the old versions?

New type and logo work for me
Both are current, and that's what Pepsi should shoot for. For some reason, Pepsi's image doesn't have the same nostaligia draw that the Coca Cola logotype does, so why *not* reinvent itself when times call for something fresh?

Two thumbs down
The first thing I thought of was the Obama campaign! This reminded me of his symbol. I do like the type that Pepsi is set in however.
new Pepsi logo and font
I don't think that the new sphere makes a dynamic statement strong enough to justify the change that was made. I feel I'm looking at a beach ball. The placement of the word gives me the feeling of the two being somewhat disconnected.
I don't particularly care about the weight of the font. The overall effect I get from this new design feels visually disconnected and lacks graphic energy. After all, if you're going to sell me caffeine in a can, make me feel like there's energy inside this can!
Ironically, I prefer to drink Pepsi, I don't like coke. As far as cans are concerned, Coke is ahead of the game in this category. I believe the change was a step backward.
Good point about the disconnect between font and logo
Hi redeyes48,
You make a good point that the word "pepsi" and the circle don't make a natural connection.

What will it look like in the supermarket?
When on the Supermarket shelf or in the fridge does it stand out from the competition. Yes if placed next to Coke but not so much if just amongst all other drinks.
The lower case pepsi is far
The lower case pepsi is far better than the previuos
'PEP SI'
and the 'p's make the connection with the logo for me,
but it could be mistaken for a can of oil. Is pepsi taking its customers for granted?

I like the logo and type, but not the placement
I think the logo and the type work, but their relative placement and sizes don't. They seem disconnected to me. It's a good start but not finished.
Change is good ....
They've invested a lot of equity in the "beach ball" .....but it is a strong design statement. When the name alone reaches iconic status, there is room to play without risking identity. I like it and hope it "works" ....however they define that success.
Pepsi Logo
Actually there was nothing wrong with the past logo. Can you imagine if they did to IMB, UPS, FORD, GE, what they did to Pepsi. The past logo was timeless. Some Branding/ Marketing guy came up with some BullS#$% statistics and sold it to Pepsi. I am speaking from a successful 30 year career in design and advertising.
LogoBamaNation
I find it ironic that this branding campaign appeared about the same time that Obama's campaign got under way and how similar they are. I have even seen the logo incorporated together on a press backdrop and on strategically placed light pole banners throughout Atlanta during the elections. I guess they are attempting to connect to a "New Generation" in a very obvious and subliminal way. This logo does nothing for me and is disconnected as many have said and it seems Pepsi did it just to do it.
Um, ever occur maybe Obama's
Um, ever occur maybe Obama's Marketing campaign tried to associate him with a recognizable image that already floods the market? Coke & Pepsi can be picked out of a crowd by anyone..I'm surprised he wasn't in front of Golden Arches too!
But nonentheless...the company has been KNOWN to keep changing the packaging, updating the logo, etc...doesn't make it right, but doesn't make it wrong either But they branded in the market, people will drink it no matter what. But this particular design doesn't work for me...
everything is changing around us - why change pepsi now?
strategie 1: something should be reliable in this world - keep it!
strategie 2: back to the roots, why not take the logo from the time, when America boomed?

well....so many changes during all this time...was it worth it? well, in my opinion this change is representative why pepsi is number 2 and coca-cola is number 1.
A strong brand and image doesn't need to change so often! Like it isfolks!!!
