Hi, I am currently working as a Marketing Coordinator. I have several years of experience in graphic design but have been out of it for a few years. (InDesign is new to me if that tells you anything.) I really miss doing design work. The other day my supervisor asked me if I would like to do graphic design. I said I would but would need to be paid a designer's salary, which would be significantly more money. He said the company "couldn't" do that. I do not plan to stay at this company. I really want to get up to speed on InDesign and beef up my portfolio.
I have InDesign/Illustrator/Photoshop at work and this seems like a golden opportunity, but I would have to sell my hard-earned skills cheap...i.e. the company would be getting a bargain in my opinion. I struggle between my knowing what I should be getting paid and the opportunity to learn and get up to speed. Should I sell myself out or hold my ground and learn InDesign on my own? If I decide to tell my supervisor that I will, on second thought, do the graphic design, how would I explain my change of heart? I cannot say the truth which is I'm using the company and this opportunity in order to leave...any thoughts?

Well, no one likes to feel

Well, no one likes to feel cheated, so if your gut tells you no, then don't, but... As long as you're not taking a pay cut, it might be a good way to work your way back into graphic design, beef up on InDesign and the other premier programs, and work on your portfolio. Not many companies will want to hire you without this knowledge/background anyway, so get it while you can and make the most of it. Then move on!
