It takes more than a good education to succeed in a any field. It takes real-world experience to learn the practical lessons they don’t teach in school. And if you’re a creative pro it takes a great set of tools to use so you can get the best results for the least amount of time, money, and effort.
Let’s “kick” off the week with a cool new font-related Kickstarter project. This one is the brainchild of Harald Geisler, a typographer in Frankfurt, Germany. The project (which has already surpassed its initial funding goal by a factor of ten) is to create a font based on the handwriting of Sigmund Freud. Natually, the name of the project is “A letter to your shrink.”
A picture’s worth a thousand words but occasionally you may need to include a few words in your pictures. So here’s a batch of tips and shortcuts for working with text in Photoshop CS6. Add them to your repetoire and you’ll use them again and again.
1. To select all the characters in a layer, double-click the layer’s type icon in the Layers panel.

The craving—and craze—for new faces has led to the revival of scores of old metal typefaces, but many deserving faces have been ignored. Here, I’d like to call attention to my top ten candidates for faces that ought to be available in digital form but aren’t. In a future column, I’ll train the same lens on display faces.
FontStruct, the free font-building tool sponsored by FontShop just celebrated its fifth anniversary. In the half-decade since the launch of FontStruct, users have created over 650,000 fonts with the site’s tools.
FontStruct allows users to create fonts from geometrical shapes in a grid pattern in the “FontStructor” font editor. You might think of it as building glyphs from Legos.
