My very first trip to Adobe headquarters, which was then in Mountain View, California, was in 1992 to get a preview of a brand-new technology the company was calling Carousel. In a small conference room, Adobe executives proposed that there was a massive need for a single document format that could be viewed and printed across any computer platform while still maintaining the look of the original document.
The Portable Document Format (PDF), undeniably one of the most commonly used formats for electronic documents, is now accessible as an ISO International Standard: ISO 32000-1. This move follows a decision by Adobe Systems Incorporated, original developer and copyright owner of the format, to relinquish control to ISO, who is now in charge of publishing the specifications for the current version (1.7) and for updating and developing future versions.

Adobe recently took the wraps off of Acrobat 9, a new version of the PDF-generation software that now includes some very flashy new features, including native Flash support. The company also introduced a public beta of Acrobat.com, an online document-collaboration service. Finally, Adobe announced that Acrobat 9 will be part of version 3.3 of the Creative Suite 3.3 Design Premium and Standard editions.
