After losing my PSSA English teaching position the day before tenure, I found that I had to reinvent myself. I tried for four months to find a position as a copywriter, but despite the fact that my minor was in professional writing and my actual job description included teaching students to write effectively for an audience, I never had any responses. With my fiftieth birthday looming, I realized that I had enough of office politics and that I would freelance as a business communications expert. In order to effectively reinvent myself, I stopped work on my Masters Degree in Reading and went back to college for graphic design so that I could design newsletters, brochures, business cards, and web pages. When my first client's experience with GoDaddy.com's design department turned out to be a disappointment for him, he asked me to not only to finish writing the content for his site, but to actually design the pages and to do the web development for him. He has been very patient with me since I am doing as I am learning.
My current classes in design and development utilize text books that I have a difficult time understanding. I have been buying The Missing Manual books to augment my classes whenever possible. As a former Reading teacher, I find them to be well structured, easily understood, and enjoyable to read. I know that I would never have gotten to the point where I am just about to upload my first website to the host without the Missing Manual Dreamweaver book. You should see my copy! Its a dog-eared mess.
I love doing design and development, almost as much as I love writing. It's like putting together a puzzle and standing back in total satisfaction when the whole picture comes together.
